As with PTFE, FEP is also known by the trade name TEFLON®. Similarities in their molecular structure result in similar chemical, electrical and physical properties and hence similar applications. Notable differences appear in the following areas. Firstly, FEP has a lower continuous service temperature, 400°F. Secondly, FEP is more closely related to thermoplastics as it does not exhibit the extremely high melt viscosity of PTFE. Thus, FEP can be processed by conventional extrusion and moulding techniques. But many other general properties are the same such as low coefficient of friction and insolubility in solvents. Also, better low adhesion properties, as FEP has the lowest critical surface energy of any polymer; and better transparency toward UV and visible light, as FEP has the lowest refractive index of any polymer; are enhancements over PTFE FEP must, like PTFE, be chemically etched in order to permit bonding with adhesives that yield reasonable strength levels.

FEP LINED CONVEYOR ROLLER
FEP-lined Conveyor Roller
There are certainly a wide variety of high temperature resistant plastics, which include the FLUOROPOLYMER group discussed in this chapter. We know this can be confusing, but at Claremont Polymer Shapes you will get all the assistance you need to understand what is important for you with any of these or the rest of our products. Just ask us and you will receive the benefit of our experience and that of our suppliers and our colleagues in the business. We really do care - you'll see.

The use of FEP Roll Covers for non-stick applications is probably one of the most common in industry. In order that you might achieve the best results in the use and fitting of FEP Roll Covers, we at Claremont Polymer Shaps supply a pamphlet pertaining to application and installation data with each cover sold. When ordering, be sure to add 3 inches per 100 inches of length to allow for shrinkage during covering of the roll and 2 to 3 inches for end "cuffs".
