PEEK (POLYETHERETHERKETONE)
VICTREX® ARLON®
SPECIFICATIONS:
FDA TITLE 21 CFR 177.2415
NATURAL COLOUR:
DARK TAN
A tough, semi-crystalline THERMOPLASTIC material; PEEK offers very good mechanical, electrical and chemical resistance properties combined with quite high temperature resistance. Particularly important is PEEK's resistance has to hydrolysis. It can withstand high temperature, high pressure steam for long periods and is used in steam valve seats and "down-the-hole" applications that are subjected to severe chemical environments. With high temperature resistance, high impact strength and high fatigue resistance, PEEK is an ideal material for compressor discs, plates and rings. PEEK has very good electrical insulation properties that are maintained at high temperatures. Equally important is the very low smoke and toxic fume emissions of PEEK on exposure to flames. Also, PEEK offers excellent radiation resistance, as good or better than Polystyrene, but with far higher temperature and physical strength capabilities and maintains it in acidic and basic environments. Oxidizers deteriorate PEEK and the only common solvent is concentrated sulphuric acid. PEEK machines well using high speed tooling with heavy cuts at high speed being possible. Water is a suitable coolant. Bonding using polar adhesives such as epoxies, etc. works well. Bonds are enhanced by mechanically or chemically etching the surface.

PLEASE NOTE:
As a semi-crystalline polymer, natural PEEK 450G, has a different coefficient of thermal expansion above and below its glass-transition temperature (Tg). The figure shown in the GENERAL PROPERTIES chart of the PEEK cover page, as with all other materials, is the figure at room temperature. With PEEK the change at its glass transition temperature of 302°F is dramatic; up to 6.0 x 10-5 in/in/°F! You should take this into consideration in any designs where PEEK could be exposed to temperatures above Tg. The presence of fillers significantly decreases the spread between the thermal expansion values.
